I have a 1989 Camaro with a 305 TBI. How can I raise my horsepower without going broke? What is the cheapest way to get about 300 horsepower out of my car?
Thank you.

First, you are going to get alot of flack for:
A) having a 305
B) having a TBI

Trying to get 300HP from that combo, and doing it for very little money will be near impossible.

What is your ultimate goal? Do you just want "300HP" or are you trying to get into the 13's in the 1/4 or what?

I think a good increase is an exhaust system. From headers to muffler, but that alone can get you $600+ They also make performance TBI manifolds and stuff too.
Your biggest and cheapest gain will be Nitrous.

BT, he could have the infamous 2.8 MPFI and be asking the same thing. ;)

IMO unfortunately you won't ever get 300 hp on a budget. At some point heads will have to be figured into the equation.

A good place to start with though, is all the typical things like BT mentioned. Exhaust, headers, nitrous and I would add a cam. TBI cams are nearly round. "Lobe, you saw a lobe?"

I thought I did, until I wiped the oil off.

buy a crate motor like the ramjet or something drop in, bolt in, and run. Sounds like something you'll beinterested in. I think they advertise 385 hp from the ramjet.

The RamJet is 350 HP. Your thinking of the 385 Fastburn.

Crate motors are the way to go. They are factory engineered, proven horsepower, and come w/ an awesome warranty. It just kills your wallet.

well based on his questions, it doesn't seem to me that he has researched this subject very well. That is why I suggested it. Either way your going to have to shell out some bucks to go fast consitently and reliably.

If he had researched anything prior to this posting, ie browsed thirdgen.org, or did a search on Yahoo, etc. Then you would have understood the limitations of his current setup. He would know the TBI is a major restriction and will not support any real HP numbers. Also judging by the fact he wants "300 HP" without stating any other goals like you pointed out. If you stick a 300 hp motor in a 5000 lb car, is going to run slower than sticking in a 3500 lb car.

Anyways....

The TBI setup can be made to flow, just not with the stock throttle body. tongue.gif Get a holley 670 throttle body, Holley TBi manifold, headers, cam, and a set of WP SR 305 torquers and you should have a sweet little engine. If you're on a budget, just pick a few of the least expensive ones.

Come on Jay, browsing thirdgen.org is not a prerequisite for doing research. There's so much b.s. over there it can be hard to find out the facts.

Everyone has to start somewere. Hell i wish i had run into this board when i first started modding my L03. I would have started building a 350 a year ago.

Troo dat, if I had known about this board sooner and started on my car later - I could have saved money instead of buying a Mini Ram. I am tossing around the idea of having John do an LT1 intake for me just to have one.

Instead of spending money on my LO3(engine) I've decided to spend it on my suspention and other parts until I can do an engine swap. Which wont be for a while. The change from 2.72 open to 3.73 POSI was the best move I've made so far. Kind of pricy, But I can feel the "seat of the pants" difference and I haven't even installed the speedo gears. Just my opinon.
