Can I delete the PCV valve and just use two beathers (one on each side of the the engine on the valve covers)? Will this cause any problems?...

Thanks,
Craig

I was going to do this as well and when I did a little digging I couldn't find any problems with doing it. Unless you count enviro-nazis but we since that no one in their right mind cares about them.........

Its not so much of an environmental thing as it is an engine saving device. The purpose of the PCV is to evacuate crankcase contaminates. Not having one can lead to moisture in the motor, sludge buildup, etc... This won't happen overnight, its a long term thing, but definatly a problem. I'd run one if I could.

But aren't you evacuating all of the contaminates with 2 breathers??

No, a breather is just a filter. If anything, its filtering the contaminates back into the motor. Left alone, there is a tendancy for pressure to build in the crankcase, due to small amounts of blowby. Thats why cars w/ clogged PCV/Breather systems blow out oil seals rather quickly. This pressure will just escape via the breather, and the filter portion will trap the contaminates from leaving the engine.

The PCV is responsible for pulling a vacuum, to suck out crank case vapors. The breather on teh other valvecover is just to let fresh air in so that a complete vacuum isn't pulled on the crankcase.

Pulling a vacuum on the crankcase seems to be the thing to do on turbo applications....i guess to counteract the affects of pressurizing the crank case with boost....supposedly less oil leaks in general and also reduction in froction on the pistons due to the affect on the ring package...just tossing that out there.

Just how do you pull a vacuum on a "boosted" engine?

They use an actual external vacuum pump, belt driven or electrical, put a "sump" with a filter in it to collect any oil.....

Oh really? I new deisel engines had that, never new that on tubo motors. They don't use vacuum pumps on the supercharged 3800, cause the PCM will only let you have boost under high load conditions, then vacuum doesn't really matter anyhow.

Yeah i never said this was a factory thing....just something I noticed the TTA/buick guys talking about.

Thanks,
CraigBecause I'm not familiar with this! Can someone "school" me? What is this PCV Valve and where is it located! Thanks you!

They're on each one of your valve covers. It's that little rubber hose looking thingy that plugs into the top of the cover.

Here's a link that provides a pretty explanation.

It works much like how you chimney does.

Tom owns one! I guess I never thought about the "venturi" effect.
