View Full Version : Oil Pressure sending unit
I bought a new L98 shortblock and am not sure which oil pressure sending unit I Should use. First I got the one for an 89, the year Camaro I have, but it didn't thread into the correct hole, it was too big. So I brought that back and got the sending unit for an 88, but I got the one that goes on the block right behind the manifold. There was a hole right next to the filter but it was plugged. The 89 Sender fit in there. Is where #21 is in, where the 88 and lower sender goes and where the orange arrow, where the 89+ sender goes?

I have two sending units, both mount behind the intake manifold. I have the plug above oil filter, then I have the brass fittings as seen in the diagram. The one fitting has two holes in it, one for the guage unit, the other for the fuel pump switch. Mine is an '87

Yes that is where the oil sender/fuel switch sensor goes for an 89+ year, right above the filter. IF you are using an 89+ wiring, you can get a brass adapter from Advance (.125" male NPT --> .25" female NPT) to work with the hole location on top of the block.

Sounds like dome more bastard years. THe '89 up uses a combined sender for the gauge and the pressure switch that mounts above the oil filter like Craig mentioned. The '88 uses seperate senders...one like the little can looking thing that mounts behind the intake manifold (gauge) and the other mounts above the oil filter. I guess '87 uses some kind of double hookup near the intake if Bernards is factory. HTH
Thanks. So it goes where the arrow is pointed then huh? I guess I'll have to plug the top hole where the manifold is?
I added oil today and was about to prime it to see where the oil comes out to see which hole gets the sender but I couldn't find my drill and I had to go to work.
I guess Friday I'll go back to the place I got the part from and get the part I originally got. The one for the 89.
Thanks again for the the replies. This board might not have as much activity as other boards do but the users know what their talking about.

What does your oil sending unit plug look like, and where is it routed? My stock '87 has two seperate connectors, a single prong and a dual prong, routed to the back of the manifold. To use the sending unit where the arrow is, it needs to be one semi-oval connector w/ 3 wires, and the harness needs to be long enough to run down to there. What is currently on the car? Both locations will have oil pressure, the question is, what is your car wired for?

Put the unit originally from your car in the hole above the filter where you have the orange arrow. Plug the other two. It'll work. In fact, IIRC, the #21 hole wasn't even tapped with the right thread pitch on my long block. I had to use the "orange" hole when I swapped from an L03 to an L98. They had the "orange arrow" hole plugged and the other one wasn't. Took me a second to figure out why the sender wouldn't fit in the open hole, then I saw the plug in the correct hole. Fit right in.
Take back the sender from the 88.

Since I sorta know Chris, I can clear up some confusion... he has an 89' 2.8L car. He is putting together an L98 shortblock w/ Vortec heads and a TPI unit off eBay. He hasn't gotten the harness for the swap yet. He's pretty much trying to work out all the stuff for the motor while it is on the stand and easy to work on.

Well he'll need the corect setup for whatever year wiring harness he is going to be using. Sorry didn't see that in your post.
Yep Brian is right. That't what I figured. I guess I'll go back and get the one for the 89. I was going to get the wiring harness that I needed, wasn't sure on the year yet. Thanks for the help guys.

89+ would be a good year.....it will eliminate that cold start injector.....just one less thing to go wrong smile.gif

Not to infect you w/ my point of view, but if the wiring is currently up for grabs, why not just get a speed density setup? Way more reliable than the crappy MAF sensor IMHO. My TPI setup came from an '85 Y-car ('85 being the crap year of all TPI) and I made it into a '92 version w/ a few simple mods and a '90-92 style wiring harness.
I've considered the speed density setup but it isn't in my budjet, I don't know if a maf sensor is either though. I'm 17 and this is going to be my car to get to school in and around when it's done. I'm on a limited budjet, no parents help with it.
What else will I need besides a sd computer, a map sensor, and a harness for a speed density engine? I've heard those harnesses are hard to find also.

Well, if you can't find a S/D harness, you can always go w/ the Painless. I hated my painless harness, but I hear that the "extra long" version corrects all of my gripes about it.
Lots of us have done TPI swaps, primarily S/D swaps, so feel free to ask away.
DenaliTech I think I emailed you a while ago about the painless wiring harness. I was confused about it though, when I removed the 2.8 harness everything was togteher there wasn't a seperate engine harness. The only harness i have left in the engine bay is for the lights, and a few wires for the a/c.
I'm looking to get the whole thing, even the thing that plugs into the... I want to call it the fuse block but it's probably the wrong name for it. It's on the firewall on drivers side next to the brake booster. Anyway I need that and even the battery cabels. I saw an auction on ebay a while ago for a harness that was that complete but didn't want to spend what the bidding was up to. As much as I don't want to use thirdgenresource again, their harness seem to be as complete also, judjing from their pictures anyway. I might give Camaro Heaven a call and maybe House of Camaro also.

The painless is strictly an engine management harness only. It goes straight from the engine to the ECM only. No gauges, lights, etc... If you yanked all that out, then your only option is a stock replacement, unless you want to re-wire it all again.
I'll stick with a stock replacement. I don't like working with wires. I wish I could have went carb but can't because of emissions.

Well, actually I guess I wish I could not have emissions. I live in NY and I don't think I'll get away without having an air pump and all that garbage.
