Top 10 worst drag racing mistakes:

1) Put lots of stuff in your car.

2) Come unprepared.

3) Granny shift it.

4) Come late.

5) Don't build a regular routine.

6) Be a burnout king.

7) Use street radials.

8) Stage that car deep.

9) Heat up the motor good.

10) Change a bunch of things at once.

:D

I disagree with #7 (street radials). That's not a mistake, it's a choice. You don't need slicks or drag radials to race.

Must be something wrong with my motor. It runs like crap until it gets about 180 degrees.

You left the worst offender off the list, which should be "Run your mouth and not show up"

My first quarter mile pass was on a 1970 Artic Cat Panther with a 303 Sachs rotary...did a blistering 32mph, no timing lights, just the local sled club got the local PO to use the radar on a cleared 1/4 mile on a frozen lake. Yes, I got laughed at. Did not care, I borrowed a sled and did it.

My first pass with a car was a 1970 VW bug with a rev kit, dual single throat Webers and a four into one header.... an 18.68, don't remember the ET. Got that car down to a 15.58 eventually. Girlfriend told me I was a geek, got rid of girlfriend ;)

I just basically copied that list from an older magazine I had. I found it amusing.

there should be something about "asking people to borrow their helmet" in there.

I run my regular tires sometimes. That way I have an idea of how I really run on the street and can compare/adjust things accordingly.

Because a burnout is only supposed to be done long enough to warm up the tires to grip better and get the water from the box off. Do it too long with the "John Force" syndrome and all you do is get those little hot balls of rubber all over your tires and all over the staging lanes that make you loss traction on the launch.

Watching someone at a track do a long burnout on street radials in my experiance is like that person saying they own a viper and not knowing what side the gas tank is on or how many gears it has.

Dang, someone was digging deep in the archives...

I've heard that doing a burnout w/ street radials actually does more bad than good. I guess the only point to doing a short one would be to clean the tires off.

I agree with Aaron on the street tire burnout. When I ran street tires at the track I avoided the water box all together. The way I see it, if you need a water box to do a burnout on street tires you need more motor. ;)
