Okay, today I decided to play with the timing. I have it set at 6deg base. I bumped it back to 0deg and wham, no more detonation. However, my pulse width climbs across the board (Idle at 6deg the PW is like 1.7, 2.2 at 0deg).
So I try 4 deg, a little better but still higher pulse width. I go back to 6 deg, detonation. So I try 5 deg and no detonation but PW are still high. WTF? The car is that sensitive that 6 deg caused massive detonation on anything over 1/3 throttle but 5 deg is okay? Is my chip going away? I do have my S&P chip still laying around. Maybe I'll throw that in tomorrow and see what shakes out though I suspect they probably gave the chip more agressive timing maps.

Are your spark tables too advanced for the nominal 6° static advance?

No, I have been using a stock 92 L98 chip. Only changes Bernard and I made was turning off EGR, changing fan temps and changing injector type to 24lb. I'd expect something like this from an aftermarket chip that they just bump base timing, not a stock GM chip.

Well, this morning I fire up the car, and back to the same thing. Detonation with anything greater than 1/3 throttle. P/W back to a more normal reading.
Is there anything that physically moves in the distributor when the computer calls for timing advance? Seems after I moved the dist to change the timing things loosened up but after sitting overnight it locked back up. I know it sounds far fetched but after all, I am to the "grasping at straws" point. I've even had thoughts of, gasp, carburation!

Nope, distributer stays rock solid (or should anyhow ;) ).
