Concerning older cars, I doubt carfax would turn up what I'm looking for.

VIN # 2W87Z7N237753

I tried a google search, nothing. Kind of stumped on what I would do next.

Far as I know the only way to do older cars is through your local DMV.

Pontiac fans have the Historical Services in their corner, not to sure on the other models.

Your correct about Carfax and the like as they only do 17 digit VINs.

From what I read on the PHS site, they are limited to documenting cars and verifying them. I have the window sticker, bill of sale, etc. It's a long shot, but trying to find the 77' Trans Am my father bought brand new. It only had 7100 miles on it when he sold it in late 1979. Hopefully it has been cared for and loved as much as he did.

I doubt it's for sale, but it would be nice to track it down and offer the current owner copies of the documents I have in my possesion.

That would be too cool man. Course you know the odds of it even being around anymore are very slim.

Absolutely, it's definately a shot in the dark. But, some threads recently about old cars in garages and people tracking down old cars has get my hopes up. If I do find it, hopefully it's in nice shape and I can negotiate for some nice pictures of the car in exchange for copies of the documents. I think it would really make the old man happy to have some high quality pictures of the car.

There's a funny story behind it... he was 27, went out boozing with his buddies one weekend. They ended up at the movies and went to see Smokey and the Bandit. He left the movie theater still buzzing and made one of his friends drive him to the Pontiac dealship. He bought the car that afternoon. No cell phones back then, and my mother was at home wondering where the hell he was. She said around 8pm she heard a horn honk, looked outide and there was my father in a red Trans Am. She was pissed, but got over it.
